I’ve wasted a lot of time on elevator pitches, trying to condense a lifetime of making into one short sentence. In fact, I’ve given up trying and now say ‘At the moment I’m interested in …’ or ‘I’m currently working on…’ In this, there is room for manoeuvre, space to include all the things I may or may not be thinking at any given moment.

I like to think that when you see something that I have made you will know that I have made it, it will be fiddly, more or less precise, and, generally very colourful. However, each thing comes from one of two very different places, and so I tend to draw a line down the middle.

Making patterns comes from a need to find rhythm and order, to arrange things in such a way that I can exhale and lose myself in repetition, clean lines and colour. In reality, my life does not look like this at all. Neither my mind nor my studio are remotely tidy. Patterns take the crazy light speed of the world and slow it down; it is a function process. Azulir is that expression, and, as I like things to be useful, I use lampshades and stationery as a canvas.

Writing and painting words is my attempt to understand the world and by extension to be understood. Here, I throw words and paint at the page with wild abandon; cutting, sticking and altering until I feel the truth of a thing. A more accurate reflection of my life perhaps, but altogether far more slippery. Kind Words for Everyday Superheroes is an ever-expanding collection of art books and prints that speak of being alive in this difficult world.
